What a let down it is and it's all down to having to play this game online. On my PC, the game is all jerky, slow and is almost impossible to play, due to it keeping on connecting to their website to run.
From all the hype pre launch and all the updates and bug fixes that Ubisoft have issued I hoped that all the poor comments would now be a thing of the past. Unfortunately not. Why they couldn't have stayed with the same game as the previous 6 I don't know. Roll on Settlers 8. One good thing about this game though is that when you register it at Ubisoft you are then allowed to play their free online games.
Try the Settlers online - it's free and runs very smoothly. It's also what I think the developers were trying to do with Settlers 7. It's also very addictive, so be warned. It's excellent game play, interesting story line and enough fun and enjoyment to keep you glued to your PC for a weeks worth of fun.
I was really excited to learn that this updated version of a classic game existed. I fondly remember playing various versions of this on my Amiga Commodore, then my PC in the 90's. It is a simple concept but furiously addictive, and this new version keeps true to the roots of the game, but has updated the graphics and added new features and challenges without spoiling the game play. What I really like is the face it isn't overly complicated, like so many RPGs, so you can play this and really enjoy it, without it necessarily taking over your life.
The additional benefit was that it was available for my Mac, which I feel restricts me a lot more- and have to buy games from the apple store. And you can install it on multiple computers as it's on a disc, rather than being able to download it once from the apple store. Would definitely recommend this! I don't care about the requirement for a permanent internet connection, as most people nowadays have that so it doesn't matter! What does matter is that this game is SO different to most of the other settlers games.
My favourite of the series is the settlers four, where the player has a lot of control over the production lines and economy of the settlement, down to exactly where a building is placed. Here, there is a place it can go, and a place it can't, no middle ground. There is also a lot less necessary for production.
In S4, to make swords, for instance, you need coal and iron ingots, and iron ingots need coal and iron. In S7 you need iron. If you're gonna get a settlers game, I recommend any of the games before S5. Yeah, big deal. Free DLC? You mean, stuff that should be free to begin with? Basically, even though they're completely screwing the players with their DRM, they're not fixing that I mean, reports are that the MP servers are deserted probably mostly from not selling enough due to the bad rumors -- so let alone if even people like me who do own the game prefer not to play because of this contrived DRM scheme I wouldlike to stress my utmost displeasure of ubisoft recent decision to implement a DRM system that is nothing short of male bovine excrement.
One can only conclude that the responsible people have very little in their cranial cavity and the little they do have must be made of Equus ferus caballus feces. As a result, incompetence and stupidity are prevalent and one can only conclude that these hominids are opportunistic scavengers and have absolutely no remorse when stealing from honest hard working people. Had they had any such remorse they could have, at the very least issued an acknowledgement and an apology for the issue at hand. But no such thing has been forth coming leaving us with the conclusion that their actions are deliberate.
How should a reasonable person deal with such delinquent and unethical entities? For starters all fellow consumers should avoid these hominids and be made aware of the male bovine excrement they will be dealing with should they wish to hand over the extortion fee to acquire any "genuine" title published by the above mentioned hominids.
Fortunately though generic alternatives are available and do not require any extortion fee and do not have the terrible odor of their male bovine excrement. Consumers choosing the generic alternative can rest assure that the extortion fees taken by the hominids will not have been taken in vain as the generic alternative will still provide adequate entertainment.
